Aaah, Mirrormask. How is it that I did not know this was coming out? I went to the art theatre in Tempe last weekend to see it. I loved it. The visuals were amazing, just like the comic book. The sad thing is though, that half of the reviews I read gripe about how the plot is lacking. Lacking, a Neil Gaiman story lacking in plot? Pfft Riiiight. I mean, if any attention at all was paid to the stunning array of visuals and how integral they were to the story line....people would be comparing this transition to the likes of sin city for its true translation of the printed medium. This film features 3d and CGI effects that are obvious, but they do not take you out of the story with their brash flamboyancy. The cosutmes are simply amazing, and the unique characters in themselves are enough to keep you interested long after the film is over. As a fan of Gaimans collected works, I realy appreciate that the Jim Henson company turned this movie out. ALthough the great Mr Henson is long past, the legacy is clear in films like this. There has not been anything this enchanting and captivating since the likes of Labyrinth. I constantly found myself being caught up in the individual scenarios, individual characters and such. There could be an entire show about the sphinx and I would be thrilled. I will most definitley be looking for this comic series for my collection very soon. There are also a great series of figures and neat items that I saw in Juxtapoz magaine. I think I may buy a little sphinx for myself. I highly reccomend this film to anyone with an attention span above that of a fruit fly. To anyone else, I hear they are making another Rob Schnieder movie, better get your tickets.
